WHSmith - 5 pounds off when you spend 15 on books

WhSmith 5 pounds off 15 pounds Campaign:
WHSmith - £5 off when you spend £15 on books

Running on:
In WHSmith stores - WHSmith Ltd

What's the big idea:
Far from being a mere printed statement of a financial transaction, receipts are fast becoming the most direct form of into the hand marketing. Forget mobiles - these messages are being put in the hands of known purchasers who have an interest in your brand and they can be used as the voucher against your next purchase. Whoa, this could be massive! Of course they've been around for years on Pay as you Go parking tickets, supermarkets are using them for price guarantee promotions and now retailers in general.

How:
I don't know if there is a minimum purchase level - none was advertised. In fact the availability of the offer was not overtly promoted at all apart from with the receipt. If it's any guide, I only spent £7.50 on envelopes and they were on a deal too. The terms and conditions are online and very generic. The most applicable one being that you can't use the voucher on books that are already on promotion, which in itself is probably quite difficult to achieve.

What's on offer:
£5 off voucher
For use against a future purchase over £15 on books.

Website:
The promotion is redeemed in-store. You can however find out more at www.whsmith.co.uk/tillvouchers

When:
Interesting one this. I made the purchase on Sat 20th. The voucher was valid from a week Monday to cover two working weeks. So, i couldn't just go back into the shop and buy books I had to make a special future trip.

Any good?
It's a strong offer and they've obviously thought about the validity period. If you used it straight after the purchase you originally went for, you are very likely to just buy two qualifying books and nothing else. If you wait 2 weeks you may well have a few things on your list and will make a few extra purchases too. Or alternativey, you may lose or forget the voucher altogether and never go back to WHSmith again. Either way, before you throw that receipt in the bin, check the reverse first. It might be a more valuable piece of paper than it first appeared!

I received a till voucher from WHSmith -"£5 off when you spend £20 in store" excluding DVDs, CDs, Gaming consoles, Console games & Gaming products. I tried to buy a £20 theatre token using this and paying £15 cash but this was not allowed. Nowhere did the till voucher exclude purchase of tokens. I was told that the purchase of a book token would also be disallowed, the reason being given that it would be using the till voucher in conjunction with another voucher. I think that this is a nonsense: buying a book or theatre token is simply delayed payment, not a price reduction. The till voucher is at best unclear or at worst deliberately misleading. I contacted customer services who acknowledged this but couldn't do anything to rectify it.

Hi Laura

Yes, it is annoying when you face confrontation at the till when you're trying to redeem. I've just looked at the terms and conditions for the £50 off voucher at the website they quote on the front of the voucher. I'm sorry to report that it does state that: "the following items are excluded from all voucher offers: CDs, DVDs, games & gaming consoles, stamps, tobacco, confectionery, newspapers, stickers & collectables, gift vouchers, phone cards, e-top up, iTunes, e-gift cards, magazine gift subscriptions and e-readers, eBooks, book customer orders, book tokens, theatre tokens, day out vouchers, gift experiences and Lottery products." In fact when you look at the list, it pretty much leaves stationery, magazines and books - basically the higher margin stuff.

However, whilst you say that a theatre token is a 'delayed payment' vouchers are a strange anomaly. They are handled as if they were cash but they know that a large percentage of purchased vouchers will never be redeemed back in their store. This 'breakage' can't be accounted for immediately though and can often only go on their books after a moratorium of about two years. So by limiting the use of discount vouchers against gift token purchases etc they are protecting a precious form of revenue. It would be an immensely generous giveaway if you could use it against these 3rd party tokens.

That said, they should be a lot more up-front about it on the voucher. They are expecting a lot from consumers to check on a website before seeing such comprehensive limitations. If you feel strongly about it, why not air your views with the Advertising Standards Authority?

Thanks for sharing your experience.

All the best,

Mosaic
