Walkers - Tenner if it rains

WalkersTennerifitRains.jpg

Campaign:
Walkers - £10 if it rains

Running on:
Walkers Crisps various SKUs - Walkers Snacks Ltd

What's the big idea:
Walkers support the Great British potato. Potatoes love rain, and Walkers is giving consumers a reason to love the rain as well by offering the chance to win a tenner or redeem points for various Rainy Day Savings!

How:
Visit the Walkers website, register and enter the unique code from your crisp packet and choose your location square where you think it will rain from 21,271 grids across the UK. There are also 3 x 3 hour timeslots to choose from and the date on which you think it will rain. The dates available are strictly controlled and will close when all the squares for a particular day have been selected or it is 7.59 am, 24 hours before your chosen day. Rainfall must be more than 1mm during your chosen time slot.

For the Rainy Day Savings you bank your points, select your reward and download the voucher for your chosen reward.

What's on offer:
Winning £10 / €10
Verified by the Met Office no less, winners will receive a cheque sent within 10 working days of the receipt of the winner's address details
.

Rainy Day Savings
Entertainment: 10% or 20% off at Zavvi or thehut.com

Days Out: 1/2 price Adult or Child Ticket at Merlin Entertainment Attractions, or various offers at 23 independent attractions.

Pub Grub: Different points levels will get you stronger discounts at Sizzling Pub Co. including Free Dessert with 1 Main, 2 for 1 Main or 50% off total bill at 197 locations. There is also a 2 for 1 at 162 independent pubs.

Website:
www.walkers.co.uk/

When:
Win a Tenner: Live from 13 September 2010 to 16 November 2010, with the usual catch-all option for later entries valid for 2nd April 2011.

Rainy Day Savings: You have until 31st March 2011 to collect and redeem.

Any good?
The Win a Tenner when it rains concept is fun, well executed and will undoubtedly capture the consumer's imagination. The Rainy Day Savings are easily attainable, but fairly light on choice and coverage - very few of their 21,271 rain squares will be served by the available days out and pubs. One final observation, the quality of the featured attraction logos is very poor.

Apparently the promotion has proved so popular that you're only allowed to make 1 prediction per day, down from 2 per day previously. So, if you want to play, don't delay. Squares are running out fast.

The website does appear to be working. You can try the following browser troubleshooting steps:

  1. Update browser to the latest version
  2. If you already have the latest version, empty Cache - these are files that help pages load quicker
  3. Make sure that Flash (http://www.adobe.com/support/flashplayer/downloads.html) is up to date - this runs the animation behind many corporate websites

This should sort out most browser issues.

Anthony, the terms and conditions / FAQs state that there will always be a minimum of 2 days in which you can make your predictions. If a grid has a 'high level of occupancy' then you will be offered other days apart from the usual two subsequent days. So given the forecasts at the moment, I guess a lot of people are expecting rain and have filled up the Sat/Sun grids.

It was a good promotion, although too many people now realise this and it is very hard to actually select a square anymore. Walkers ended up having to open new days it got so popular so that it was 4/5 days ahead of itself. They opened Monday 15th today at 8am and it was virtually impossible to log on first thing and all squares were gone by lunchtime. Tuesday 16th is available on Sunday morning, then only one more day left which presumably is released monday.

I can not complain as my family have won £250 between them. I have done it almost all the way through and made £130, so a 20% success rate.

March 26, 2012 01:08

We'd love to know the biggest amount an Individual or a Family as a whole has made from Walkers Win a Tenner if it Rains

David has achieved an impressive £130 and his family £250

Can anyone do better? Please let us know.

Thanks!

Mosaic Marketing, I want to know more about why walkers did this campaign and was wandering whether you could help me out. I think it was an incredible idea and it was all that was talked about in my school for the last month. Was it too capture more consumers awareness of their brand. Because I find it hard to believe they need more brand awareness as they are already market leaders and everyone knows about walkers. Give me your thoughts. :)
March 26, 2012 01:11

Hi Chris

Many thanks for your enquiry. You raise a very valid point. Walkers don't really need to raise awareness as such, as they are the market leader by quite some margin. So, why do companies like Coca-Cola, McDonald's and Cadbury's spend so much money on marketing every year?

Well the simple answer is that they want to sell more product. But for long established brands, like Walkers, they need to go through a continual process of reinvention to maintain interest from the consumer. This can be achieved by relaunching (enhancing, improving and redesigning), brand extensions (new variants, flavours, even categories) or through tactical advertising and promotions. The necessity for this reinvention is increased in difficult economic times when consumers are tempted to 'trade down' and purchase the own-label version of products, sacrificing a bit of quality for the sake of a (sometimes) big saving. These promotions help halt this brand switch and provide an additional reason to purchase the private label, over and above the usual criteria of taste, quality, provenance and heritage.

These might be the overall aims of any marketing campaign, but in practical terms, the objectives or goals of a sales promotion are likely to be one or more of the following:

  • Create a reason to shout about the brand through advertising and ultimately virally through word-of-mouth or social networking. It's obviously worked at your school for example!
  • Enable Walkers to command more shelf space and coverage in supermarkets, e.g. big crisp dispensers at the end of aisles. The supermarkets love it when brands create a big buzz around a campaign
  • Encourage consumers to engage directly with the brand. The website is likely to have had several million consumers sign up and participate, all spending time immersed in the Walkers brand.
  • Walkers will develop and build their consumer-marketing database, to further enhance the relationship.
  • Develop the 'personality' of the brand. For example, what does the Walkers brand make you think of? Apart from rain and ¬£10 notes, you might think of cheekiness, fun, trustworthy, British-ness. This image has been built up over years of Gary Lineker-fronted advertising and consistently innovative, engaging and ground-breaking sales promotions.

I hope that this gives you some idea of why Walkers (and indeed many famous brands) might run such a campaign as 'Win £10 if it Rains'.

All the best, Mosaic Marketing

Has the Walkers Rainy day come early? The web site is stating that the last map for April 2 will be up on Wednesday?
March 26, 2012 01:14

The main promotion ends today, 16th November, according to the terms and conditions. However, there is a catch-all date available of April 2 2011 for late entrants. If you've got codes, you may as well take a punt. It's going to fill up quickly on Wednesday I'm sure. Seeing as it's during the month of showers, there's a fair to middling chance of rain?!

March 26, 2012 01:15

This just through from Walkers:
The Win a tenner competition has now closed; we're delighted to have given away a whopping £1,383,930! Check where it has rained and the winning grid-spots on past maps by clicking here.

If you have predictor plays left in your account, they can be converted into entries for our wrap-up draw to win an Ultimate Rainy Day In, including an HD TV, a Blu ray player, an X Box 360 Elite, a year's supply of Walkers crisps and lots more! All points will be converted on 1st April 2011.

So, an impressive number of tenners won - congratulations to all those who entered.
